Deception You Are (Circa, 2016)

Your smooth words compel,
Drawing us in, you sell
All the world before our eyes,
But I see your lies.

“Hush, hush, dare we say it?”
The flame in your heart is lit
To draw moths to flame,
For us to worship your name.

But deception you are,
And hearts will you mare.
For your own heart is unknown,
Impenetrable and alone.

I wrote “Deception You Are” in attempt to process what I often witness in the artistic world, and specifically in the religious artistic world. In the effort to become known, some cross over the line beyond a healthy desire of significance into narcissism.

Sometimes they unknowingly use their charisma to draw people, opportunity and favor towards themselves, yet in that process, are not able to be real, vulnerable or honest about who they really are. They lose their true selves, ultimately becoming alone in soul and spirit.
